Quick! Close your eyes and imagine your perfect wedding venue. Does it involve a historic building with plenty of great options for both your ceremony and reception? If so, Notley Abbey might be your dream wedding venue.
Notley Abbey is located on the Buckinghamshire-Oxfordshire border. It is about an hour’s drive from West London. This private countryside estate is also conveniently located about 15 minutes from Aylesbury.
If you are looking for a venue immersed in history, you cannot go wrong with Notley Abbey. Much of the features of the venue date back to over 800 years ago. For several hundred years, it was a monastery, and the venue still shows evidence of its early history.
During the 16th century, Henry VIII would stay at Notley Abbey on his way from London to Oxford. In 1944, Lawrence Olivier moved into Notley Abbey with his wife, Vivien Leigh. When they lived in there, the couple would host wonderful celebrity parties.
In 2006, the property was restored to its historic beauty while also adding in modern features to bring this venue into the 21st century. The gorgeous, historic stonework and other beautiful features are sure to impress your guests.
Ceremony and Reception Options
One of the great things about this venue is that you have exclusive use of it for the duration of your event. This means that you won’t have worry about uninvited guests popping in during your reception or be concerned about jostling with other wedding parties for the best photo opportunities. This also means that you have options when it comes to where you want to host your wedding celebrations.
With high ceilings and beautiful oak beams and floors, this is a great place for a wedding ceremony. The historic fireplace gives this option a great cozy feeling. Plus, the huge windows provide great natural lighting, which definitely makes for some wonderful wedding photos. Abbott’s Hall can accommodate up to 100 people for your ceremony or 60 people for a sit-down banquet after the ceremony.
Whether you want to use it for your ceremony, your reception, or both, the Monks’ Refectory is great for larger wedding parties of up to 190 people. The four gorgeous chandeliers and wonderful views of the gardens add to the elegance of this choice. Plus, a reception here will give you a fun historic connection to the early inhabitants since this is where the monks used to eat.
If you have always dreamed of an outdoor wedding ceremony, you are in lock. The Walled Garden is perfect for large wedding parties since it also can accommodate up to 190 people. Get married in the little nook in the wall while your guests watch the ceremony from the lawn.
Large Reception Option
If you are planning on a large reception of up to 250 people, Notley Abbey can still accommodate your needs. When extra space is needed, you can have a house party structure reception by opening up the whole house for dancing and socializing.
After a fun day of celebrating, you likely will not want to worry about driving somewhere else to spend the night. Luckily, you can spend the night at Notley Abbey. The bridal suite includes a four-poster bed, a beautiful fireplace, and an en-suite bathroom. Plus, it includes great views of the garden.
If you have a large wedding party, not everyone will be able to stay at Notley Abbey for the night, but there are eight other bedroom suites for your closest family and friends. After you and your guests enjoy a great night’s sleep in your luxurious suites, head on over to the Dining Room for a deliciously wonderful breakfast before heading out.
Great Photo Opportunities
This venue’s beautiful historic architecture combined with the venue’s gorgeous outdoor natural beauty make this a photographer’s paradise. Along with the great wedding and reception locations, Cloisters Garden Walkway, the tree-lined driveway, and the grand staircase are just a few of the great places to take wedding photos you will treasure for years to come.
